Bombino
Bombino’s hypnotic guitar playing, expressive voice, and danceable rhythms bring a distinctive touch to the musical tradition of the Tuareg people.
Omara "Bombino" Moctar was born outside Agadez, in the Tuareg region of Niger. As a child living in exile in Algeria, he taught himself to play the guitar using an instrument left behind by relatives. For the Tuareg in exile, the guitar served as a political tool; they used it to compose songs about their people’s rights and cultural heritage.
Rooted in the lives and language of the Tuareg, Bombino’s songs became a means of expressing a sense of belonging, preserving cultural memories, and advocating for peace. He gained increasing international recognition with his 2011 album Agadez, and in 2019, he became the first artist from Niger to receive a Grammy nomination.
His guitar playing invites the audience into a danceable groove, a rhythm that gives every musical phrase room to breathe. The power lies in patience and repetition; the music feels composed and calm, even as the intensity builds.
In 2027, Bombino returns to Europe with a new album. Ten years after his last concert in Trondheim, we once again have the chance to discover where his restless guitar will lead us.
