Marius Neset's career spans over 20 years. When he was 20, he toured the world with JazzKamikaze – in Europe, the USA, Asia and North Africa. Today, he tours with his own band and collaborates with major orchestras around the world in major concert halls in Europe. The music in Neset's new band can best be described as modern contemporary fusion mixed with jazz, with inspiration from music from all over the world from all possible genres. It is complex, well-composed, rhythmically advanced, full of energy, creativity and contrasts, but still has a strong melodic foundation that makes it widely appealing. In addition, it has a lot of freedom, which means that each concert lives its own life, and the music is taken in new directions every time it is played live.
Marius Neset has been nominated for more than 20 awards. He received the Spellemannpris for international success of the year in 2023, and his albums have been nominated several times. He has won the prestigious German ECHO Jazz Award, been nominated for both the Nordic Council Music Prize and the Edvard Prize. The Guardian’s renowned jazz critic John Fordham has described Neset as “a young titan in European new music”, and he was the only musician living in Europe to be included in Downbeat’s list of “25 for the future, that will shape the future of jazz in the years to come”.
Marius has written no less than three orchestral works for the London Sinfonietta: Snowmelt, Viaduct and Geyser, all premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in September 2022, as part of the BBC Proms series. Geyser was also released on record in 2023 and came in second place on The Guardian’s list of 10 best jazz albums of 2023. Europe’s largest jazz magazine Jazzwise gave it 5 out of 5 stars, and the album otherwise received rave reviews worldwide! He has also written major works for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Big Band, DR Big Band, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and KORK.
In September 2024, a new, very special album was released: Who We Are, a collaboration with the classical star pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.
In Neset's band, the musicians are handpicked based on their personalities and creativity, as well as the musical excess required to be free in the compositions. Two of the musicians have played with Marius since 2003 when they met at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen; Magnus Hjorth, who has released three trio albums under his own name, collaborated with Chris Potter, among others, and otherwise toured the world for many years with various projects. Anton Eger has been the drummer in Marius' projects from the very beginning and is also known for bands such as Phronesis and in 2019 released his first solo album, "Æ".
Pianist Elliot Galvin has released four trio albums, and his latest solo album was named "Album of the Month" in The Guardian. As Marius, he has also composed commissioned works for the London Sinfonietta. Bassist Conor Chaplin was also featured on Marius' latest album Geyser, is a member of Dinosaur and has played with Jaco Collier, Billy Cobham, Bobo Stenson and many others.
