Knut Lauritzen Bigband, “special guest” Dee Dee Bridgewater (NO/US)
Trondheim Jazz Festival is extremely proud to present one of jazz's biggest names in conjunction with the city's best big bands, Knut Lauritzen Bigband.
Dee Dee Bridgewater is already a living legend, with 3 Grammy awards in her pocket, as well as numerous other awards. Knut Lauritzen Big Band is Trondheim's only professional big band. The repertoire this evening in Olavshallen is varied, ranging from the New Orleans funk to beautiful ballads and hard-swinging big band jazz.
Jazz Fest 2016 gets a real kick-start!
Olavshallen Tuesday 3 May. 20:00.
Trondheim Jazzorkester with Sissel Vera Pettersen & John Hollenbeck (NO/US)
Vocalist and saxophonist Sissel Vera Pettersen has invited it several times Grammy-nominated American drummer and composer John Hollenbeck to collaborate on a new work for Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
Since the two shared the stage first time at Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2010, they wanted to continue the strong musical kinship they discovered then. The work is written for a hand picked dream team of fantastic musicians, all of which will color and shape it with their personal sound.
The stage is set for yet another success with the country's exciting jazz ensemble.
Dokkhuset Scene Wednesday 4 May. 19.00
In cooperation with the Central Norwegian Jazz Center. Backed by the Norwegian Composers Fund.
Elifantree (FI/SE) / Eyes Of A Blue Dog (NO/GB) - Double bill!
Helsinki-based Elifantree delivers an experimental musical trip in the borderland between pop and improvised music. We hear canny text material with ambient electroacoustic textures from a band that delivers a sound much fatter than the crew would suggest. Elifantree has toured Europe for the past seven years and has earned a reputation as an energetic band that constantly surprises. They have recorded three discs and is in town for the first time during Jazzfest 2016. In cooperation with the Finnish-Norwegian Culture Institute. After 14 years in England Trondheim's own phenomenal vocalist Elisabeth Nygård-Pearson have brought the family and moved back to her hometown. In London, she has since 2012 driven the band Eyes Of A Blue Dog forward and released two great albums, to critical appraise. It is said that the band has an "ambient dreamtronica sound". Jazzfest is ecstatic to introduce this band for the first time in Trondheim, a band that includes members who tours the world with bl. a. Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua and Brian Eno.
Brukbar/Blæst Wednesday 4 May. 21.00 Double bill.
Trail of Souls (NO)
Solveig Slettahjell, Knut Reiersrud and the piano trio In The Country has initiated an exciting collaboration.
It started with a concert in Berlin Philharmonic spring 2014 where several other Norwegian jazz musicians also participated. The live album from that occasion, "Norwegian Wood" was Grammy-nominated this year.
The result was so good that Reiersrud, Slettahjell and In The Country wanted to continue the project in the studio. We´re happy to present them here in Trondheim for the first time.
Dokkhuset Scene Thursday 5 May. 14.00.
Paolo Fresu & Ralph Towner (IT/GB)
Duets for guitar and trumpet is not daily fare in Trondheim, even less a part of everyday life when it is served by two masters: American Ralph Towner (guitar, baritone guitar and 12-string) and Italian Paolo Fresu (trumpet, flugelhorn).
Towner is for us most famous as a member of Oregon, and for cooperation with Jan Garbarek. Italian Paolo Fresu is a true friend of Norway, who has toured with our own John Pål Inderberg on several occasions.
Dokkhuset Friday 6 May. 19:00.
Jan Magne Førde “Mezzing” (NO/GB)
Jan Magne Førde, for the first time with his own band.
Jan Magne Førde has for over 35 years been a jazz musician and composer based in Trondheim. He is best known as a trumpeter in The Brazz Brothers, an ensemble that has toured and played over 3500 concerts in 34 countries.
At the concert in the cathedral will Forde perform bespoke music which is made with respect to the acoustics of the cathedral. Henning Sommero, the Steinmeyer organ and Ila Brass Band will challenge each other in hefty interaction, along with the rest of the ensemble.
Nidaros Cathedral Friday 6 May. 21.00 Supported by the Norwegian Composers Fund.
Trondheim Symfoniorkester og Frode Fjellheim: The Orchestral Joik Project featuring Mari Boine (NO/se-NO) Dirigent: Anders Eljas
Two of our most internationally distinguished World Music artists join forces with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. Mari Boine and Frode Fjellheim is well known to our audience, and they will present Sami music culture in arrangement with broad symphonic support. The project is an encounter between the oldest living musical genre in Europe - joik, a symphony orchestra and a brand new band and vocal ensemble.
